3rd day at the beach

We decided to go down to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina for the day. During the hour and half drive conversations Zarina learned about some of our idioms (scaredy cat, are you chicken,) We learned that buckwheat is a favorite food item in Russia and is great for losing weight.

Zarina wanted to take some pictures of all of us, and her with each of us. We were all hot and hungry, though that we were focussed on getting out of the sun and eating lunch. So didn't get pictures of each of us with her that day. : (

We let her use our camera so she could take as many pictures as she wanted. She noticed things and took pictures of things that we look right past. She took about 40 pictures between Myrtle Beach proper and Bare Foot Landing Shopping Mall in North Myrtle Beach.

Зарина хотел сделать несколько снимков для всех нас, и ее с каждым из нас. Мы все были горячие и голодные, хотя, что мы были сосредоточены на выходе из ВС и ланч. Так не получить фотографии каждого из нас с ней в тот день. : (

We spent about an hour in the Gay Dolphin Gift Shop. It is a large, large souvenir shop. Zarina turned out to be a bargain shopper. She found a small clock covered with shells for $3, and about 3 other things for a total of $13! I think I need to take her to the thrift store at home!

2nd day

Today we are all a little tired (I'm sunburned). When given the choice of beach, shopping, or staying at the house to relax, Zarina quickly chose the latter. Glad to know she's comfortable enough to be honest with us!

So I am updating our blog... she is updating her russian facebook with Jerry's help. The kids are playing Wii. Zarina got to skype with her friend, Polina, for a couple hours, too.

Nothing better than lazy days for vacation!

Сегодня мы все немного устали (Я загорел). Когда предоставляется выбор пляж, магазины, или оставаться в доме, чтобы расслабиться, Зарина быстро выбрал последнее. Рад бы знать, что она достаточно комфортно, чтобы быть честными с нами!

Так что я обновляем наш блог ... Она обновляет ее русский ЖЖ с помощью Джерри. Дети играют в Wii. Зарина получила в Skype со своей подругой, Полина, за пару часов, тоже.

Нет ничего лучше, чем ленивый дней для отдыха!

First dinner together

Zarina had a big first day... she saw and swam in the ocean the first time, she went shopping, and she ate dinner with us.

Before dinner she shared with us pictures of her city and lots of her friend and activities. Additionally, she gave us a load of Russian Souvenirs including a handmade wooden comb with her city's name, several refrigerator magnets, hand painted items (my fav - a large box painted with a Russian landscape - it will match my tiny one from Nadia in Tver, Russia 12 years ago).

At dinner, Todd asked Zarina what struck her as different on her first day. She was delighted to find Americans so friendly. Everyone asks "how are you" and people in stores ask you if they can help you... One young man gave us all free key chains upon learning she had just arrived from Russia. Even the many choices of ice cream flavors seemed to surprise her.

We ate dinner and watched the first Harry Potter movie. (We discovered a common love of all things Harry Potter with Zarina). She enjoyed watching in English but she (and I) fell asleep so we stopped in the middle.

Зарина был занят первого дня ... она увидела и поплыл в море первый раз, она ходила по магазинам, и она съела обед с нами.

Перед обедом она поделилась с нами ее фотографии города и много своего друга и мероприятий. Кроме того, она дала нам нагрузки русские сувениры в том числе ручной деревянный гребень с названием своего города, несколько магнитов холодильник, расписанные вручную элементов (Моя любимая - большой ящик с нарисованным русский пейзаж - это будет соответствовать моей маленькой один из Надя в Твери , Россия 12 лет назад).

За обедом, спросил Тодд Зарина, что поразило ее, как другой в первый же день. Она была в восторге, чтобы найти Американцы очень дружелюбны. Все спрашивают, "как вы", и люди в магазинах, прошу вас, если они могут помочь вам ... Один молодой человек дал нам все бесплатные брелки, узнав, она только что приехала из России. Даже большой выбор вкусов мороженого, казалось, ей сюрприз.

Мы ужинали и смотрели, как первый фильм Гарри Поттер. (Мы обнаружили общую любовь всех вещей Гарри Поттер с Зарина). Она с удовольствием наблюдал, на английском, но она (и я) заснул, чтобы мы остановились в центре.

Todd and I were inspired by Linda's dedication last week and decided to get up early and walk. We started walking about 7:45 am and upon return at 8:45 found everyone else up.

Zarina was drinking tea and eating some breakfast. She looked much more ready to do something. When asked if she wanted to see the ocean, she gave a big smile and said, yes. But first, she called her mom who had been working the previous day when she had called.

Then we were off to the beach...

At the beach, she reminded me of some of the Russian words I had learned before and taught me more... ocean, sand... (don't ask me to say them when we get back).

Тодд, и я был вдохновлен преданность Линды на прошлой неделе и решил рано вставать и ходить. Мы начали ходить 7:45 утра и после возвращения на 8:45 найдены и все остальные вверх.

Зарина пилa чай и елa завтрак. Она выглядит гораздо большей степени готовы делать что-то. Когда еe спросили, хочет ли она увидеть океан, она дала большой улыбкой и сказалa, что да. Но во-первых, она позвонила маме, которая работала в предыдущий день, когда она называется.

Затем мы поехали на пляж ...

На пляже, она напомнила мне о некоторых русских слов, я узнал раньше и научил меня больше ... океан, песок ... (Не спрашивайте меня, сказать им, когда мы вернемся).

First steps

I watched the status of Zarina's flights until she reached WDC on August 12th. On August 13th, she reached our town. Jerry called to tell us she was with them. We were all excited to meet her but it wouldn't be for another day. They went to our house for a short time before setting off to Oak Island, NC.

On August 14th, we finally got to meet! It was like Christmas - I was excited and nervous! The kids didn't know what to say. Even though she said she wasn't tired, I could tell she was. She had to be. She had been traveling for no less than 2 and half days almost non-stop.

She ate some food, called home, stayed in her room for a while. Soon, she was asleep (3:00 PM EST) for the night. I wasn't surprised. We left her a snack and water at her door for later in the night along with a note, "Eat, drink, go back to sleep." Well it was more than that... but that was the jist of it.

Я смотрел на статус полетов Зарина, пока она достигла МЦД по 12 августа. На 13 августа, она добралась до нашего города. Джерри призвана рассказать нам, что она была с ними. Мы все были рады встретиться с ней, но она не будет на другой день. Они вошли в наш дом в течение короткого времени, прежде чем отправиться в Ок-Айленд, Северная Каролина.

We ate dinner at THE BEST place for seafood in Southport, NC. Provision is hands down the best. It's right on the water, it's casual, it's made right there where you can see it as you walk through to order. YUM!

We walked down the beach to the Oak Island pier later and I took the picture of Luke, Rebekah, and Nathaniel. Not sure where Nick and Mike were.

A new experience for our family

In early July, we began to consider hosting a student for a couple months in the fall. We would register the student in our local highschool and provide room, board, love, and guidance for a couple months until he/she met a classmate to move in with for the year.

Zarina jumped off the page of students listed and looking for host families. We let our coordinator, Fariba, know. Fariba interviewed me, checked out our house. We completed background checks with the State Department and gave them personal references (Thanks Monique and Stephanie!). I was concerned it might be another one of my personal agenda's... then Todd excitedly told me, "we can move our old stereo up from the basement and get that old computer working again and she'll have everything a teen could want... should we get her a cell phone, too?" At that point I knew we were all "in".

As we cleaned and prepared her room, talked with the kids again about what having her with us might be like, Todd says (I had already been thinking this), "you know, if it works out, I wouldn't mind if she stayed all year." YEH!!! was my response.

Soon we began to correspond via e-mail. She was adorable. We sent her pictures of our house, us, and the whole family. Todd's parents, Jerry and Carrell, offered to pick her up at the airport and bring her with them to the beach where we would already be. It seemed as though everyone was excited to meet her!
